99 | 20023 | Best professor I've had at RIT. Funny guy, really loves his work. Great Navy stories too. |
99 | 20023 | THIS GUY IS WHY YOUR AN IT MAJOR |
99 | 20023 | Bruce could very possibly be the best professor in the entire IT department. His lectures are clear and he spends the time to make sure you understand what he's teaching. His 515 class was my favorite this quarter and I look forward to my next class of his. |
61 | 20023 | Routing & Switching: The labs are bulls***. Timed labs only test your ability to write quickly, deal with hardware failure, which Bruce claims is "part of life" and resolve topologies in 45 minutes that took him 10 minutes less to do. There's something wrong here when we're ALL graded with Ds because a professor with a decade of experience can do it 10 minutes faster than a new IT student. Oh, and instead of curving it, he gives us a 15-minute "make-up" practical which only allows the average D student to get a B-. Good lecturer but COMPLETELY UNREASONABLE grader (I have a 3.8 GPA and it sickens me to get a D and be expected to walk away happy). If you are at all concerned about your GPA, you'll read the C and D grades below. Take them as fair warning about what you're signing on for... |
61 | 20023 | I'll grade him as grossly inaccurate and poor as he does on all my lab reports (I'm a 3.5 GPA student if that holds weight)...I suppose the grading is FAIR if everyone gets a D right? Smart guy, sh#tty grader... timed labs are bullsh#t, its the quality of knowledge not the speed of hand. BOTTOMLINE: Employers want it done right regardless of time. 45 mins, for a lab that took him (a prof and 10+ year industry guy) 35 mins... sad...just sad. There are those here that love Hartpence, I did my first class with him. I have now come to discover that those who love this guy are merely Hartpence zealots of the worst kind. Yes they are looking for a solid teacher (in class) and a "buddy" (they must have never had a friend), but they also probably avoid his LAB classes like the plague...as you should to! |
85 | 20023 | Know's his stuff really well. Presents information in a very practical method, I was often bored, but I did understand the material at least. |
65 | 20012 | Really knows his networking stuff...has a problem teaching it though. Loves to put trick questions on the tests, or ones that are so narrowly defined as to be trivial. Grading in the lab section was atrocious, as was the time pressure on the practicals. (45 minutes to do labs that we had six hours total the first time). He needs to understand that not all students come into the department with Microsoft/Cisco certification and some of us can't do things as fast as he can. |
99 | 20012 | I think Hartpence deserves more credit than he is being given here. The man knows his material, he has made 515 incredibly easy and interesting to learn. He doesnt sit and flip through slides like every other prof who obviously could care less about the subject being taught. Not the most approachable, but then again neither are you. Bottom line, take Hartpence, youll finally feel like you are getting an education and learning something. |
78 | 20012 | knows his stuff, but what an ass when it comes to grading. |
75 | 20012 | While Bruce knows his stuff, he is extremly poor at writing and grading tests and labs. When students find an error or an ambiguous question, instead of attempting to see both sides of the situation, Bruce will always go through the trouble of coming up with some (usually false) answer to justify his own error. He's a very nice person and very good at networking, but a very poor teacher who can never be wrong. |
95 | 20012 | Great guy and makes class fun to boot. This guy definitely knows technology. |
95 | 20012 | |
75 | 20012 | While i have no doubt that he knows his Networking stuff, he is a pain my A$$ when it comes to Grading. That and he can't write anything that makes sense on tests or labs! |
99 | 20012 | One of IT's best professors. Knows a lot about networking and enjoys sharing this with students. Makes learning interesting. |
91 | 20012 | I thought professor hartpence was a very good teacher. he doesn't give too much homework and he is entertaining for teaching very dry subjects. |
71 | 20012 | His labs are very hard to understand, and the writeups are totally worthless. If you have a question, he doesn't give you a straight answer. He does have a good personality though, and makes going to lecture enjoyable. If it wasn;t for the fact that he makes up the labs, he'd have an A. |
88 | 20012 | Knows more about Unix than most IT teachers here. |
88 | 20012 | I had Prof. Hartpence for Internetwork Lab. Overall, he's a very thorough professor, and all the information on the exams is at some point given in class. Which is more than some IT professor can manage. He's a nice guy, but at times he can come off as arrogant. Grading was fair and the work load wasnt too much at all. His multiple choice tests had multiple answers per question. |
99 | 20011 | Bruce is a really interesting guy, outstanding lab instructor... he's pretty good with lectures too, but his real strength is hands-on activities. His lab instructions are always very thorough - they're long and sometimes a little tedious, but you will learn your stuff and you WILL ace the practicals if you can do everything in the individual labs right. |
95 | 20004 | One of ITs best! Extremely knowledgable with a lot of industry experience to back it up. He's also a really friendly/approachable guy. |
71 | 20003 | Bruce is very knowledgeable about the topics he covers in his classes, but he is very difficult to please. It is near impossible to get an A in his class. He grades his labs harshly and rarely gives a straightforward exam. He loves to discuss the underlying electrical principles behind data communication. He does not respond to e-mail promptly. |
75 | 20003 | He's a good teacher. He knows his stuff very well. However, he is not sensitive to students' needs. For instance, he gave a bonus question regarding music on the test. This question is not fair for those deaf students because they typically do not follow music news nor listen to music. |

95 | 20003 | Cool freaking guy. Lotsa' notes, but that is cool. This prof. is alot of fun. |
99 | 20003 | He really knows his stuff very well. |
99 | 20003 | I had Bruce for 342 and now for 413. Simply put, he's awesome. He's got an excellent personality, makes class fun, and really tries to explain things in terms that student's can understand. I'll always remember his toilet paper example of how an Ethernet frame works! He grades very fairly and his tests were not too bad (assuming he show's up to give them ;). Take him for 342 if you can! |
99 | 20003 | Best teacher on the planet. His knowledge of Networking is increadible. I wish He taught more Networking courses in IT. Those who rate him poorly are fools. Go SETI!!! |
95 | 20002 | Knows what he teaches better than any other professor in IT. Cares very much that his students are learning. |
99 | 20002 | Wonderfully knowledgeable and enthusiastic about passing it on. His classes are interesting and worthwhile! Got Bruce? |
99 | 20002 | Hands down, THE BEST Professor at RIT... I wish he taught all of my courses. Bruce ROCKS!!! |
78 | 20002 | |
99 | 20002 | d00d rulez |
99 | 20002 | |
99 | 20002 | One of the best profs at RIT. Had him for data com and internetworking 2. Both classes taught very well. He has a lot of knowledge and enthusiasm for the topics and it is evident through his teaching. Test are often difficult but fair. |
99 | 20002 | Prof. Hartpence is the best professor I've had here at RIT #he's funny, interesting, and seriously knows what he's talking about. |
99 | 20002 | He kicks arce!!! |
65 | 20002 | He is a fairly horrible teacher. He dismisses all questions he can't answer as stupid/off topic. His class is terribly boring, and he is more concered with getting tenure than the students |
81 | 20002 | He was kinda boring. Or maybe the course was... Data Comm. I got a B. There was a heavy percentage of grade relying on the group project. That can always mess people up because you rely on others for your grade. |
95 | 20001 | Excellent knowledge in Networking and highly recommended as a professor! HOWEVER! He is using powerpoint slides in his presentation and he does not make them available to the students. This is annoying as it is time consuming to just copy the slides in class instead of listening to what he has to say and learn more from him by taking our own notes!
|
99 | 20001 | Really knows his stuff, grades fair. Some of his questions are worded funny, but overall, GREAT TEACHER |
95 | 20001 | One of the best, enthusiastic, down-to-earth, supportive, creative, friendly, funny, yielding |
99 | 20001 | Excellent teacher! He really made the subject matter fun and interesting. His teaching style was down to earth. He didn't talk down to the students. Overall, I enjoyed class with him greatly. |
