53 | 20011 | I think Duane is a very nice person. I think he is knowledgeable when it comes to programming. However he is a very poor 3D teacher. He does not know the software. He does not have a grading system. He does not know how to do the lessons in the book. He does not know how to answer any of our questions therefore routes us to other students or the TA. He classes are unstructured and very disorganized. The undergrads are getting a better education than I am. Because the grad students are teaching them. I don't even know the basic Maya tools. I'm being cheated out of an education. |

65 | 20011 | Duane does little more than proctor his classes and seems to offer little real knowledge on the applications being taught. Unfortunately the learning curve here at RIT demands the presence of a very knowledgable mentor who can help students when they need it, unfortunately Duane seems unable to present these answers when they are requested. |
85 | 20004 | HMmmmm.... A Great programmer, and scripter for 3D animation. Enjoys alot of the fancy, high tech stuff. DONT take the History of Animation he teaches.. hehe.. not because he's bad.. its just his lectures seem to last forever.. reminds ya of that aromatheropy in the car comercial.. everyone's fast asleep. |
61 | 20003 | While the course material is fairly intense, methodology of teaching is not effective at all. Lack of communication skills and seeming dis-interest to student needs and concerns earn him a low score on this eval. He has immense knowledge and peresonal experience in the field of computer animation and advanced coding, but his inability to lecture and/or present such complex material makes him a poor choice as a teacher. If you want to learn maya, you would be better buying a Maya for Dummy's book. The course is only worth the cost of the textbook, and the amount of time YOU personally invest trying to dechiper the cryptic messages and learn the program on your own. |

53 | 20002 | He doesn't care about his students. The only reason he is at RIT is so he can get paid and work on his own projects.
If it was up to him he would not teach in any of his classes...he would let the students learn everything themselves and he would sit on his rear end. |

88 | 20001 | He knows a lot about the entire field of computer animation, is very willing to help, but can sometimes get off-topic for too long. |
75 | 20001 | One of the nicest people you will meet, however, has difficulty teaching and communicating. Not up on technology or skills concerning software. Creative input lacking sometimes confusing. Has tendency to dodge points and step off into tangents which do not really relate to issues at hand. Has improved a little in terms of being organized. Does a little bit better one on one. Grades fairly, is very understanding about personal issues and work load. Very hard to criticize, because he is a very nice person. Outstanding script and code writer, but faculty does not have him in this role, which he would no doubt excel and be useful. Example of a teacher placed out of a role in which his brilliant talent is not beeing utilized properly. |
95 | 20001 | I have worked with Duane as a graduate student only, and as such his performance has been excellent. His approach is to encourage, criticize, elaborate, and offer ideas or alternatives. He has an extensive knowledge of fine art, animation and specifically, computer animation/science. His teaching is heavily theory and content, if you are looking for specific intruction in a specific software package, you will not find it here. You will find advice concerning the full breadth of what can be done in imaging and animation using computer technology. My only criticism is that he stay on topic during his lectures; though his anecdotes are interesting, time in a lecture is limited and the more constructive discussion and feedback you can get during that time the better. |
85 | 20001 | He is a well of information for students, and has much experience in programming. The only problem is he has poor communications skills and he has been set teaching classes in which he is not (or doesn't seem to be) terribly knowledgable. His best classes is intro to character animation. Intro to modelling and intro to animation courses would be a waste of time if it weren't for the grad TA. He should teach a scripting class for Maya because it is probably something he would do very well and he isnt right now. |
65 | 20001 | Duane is not an effective teacher. His lesson plans reflected his lack of planning. He has poor communication skills. He was not helpful in the 3D computer animation lab. His lack of enthusiam was infectious. I do not recommend Duane Palyka for possible tenure. |
