99 | 20023 | It takes a little while to get used to the pace of his lectures (unusually fast) but he is always in a good mood and he is VERY intellectually stimulating. A very fair grader - we even had a bonus exam for each of our 3 exams for one quarter. I think a lot of people drop out of his classes because of the fast pace, but it's easy to get used to. A great professor all around. |
99 | 20023 | Took Calc II, Discrete Math I and II with him, got all A's. Love his grading policy. There is always time to catch up as he gives you 8 tests and picks the best 4. Once in a while he tends to talk about irrelevant stuff, he is just trying to make the course interesting. |
95 | 20023 | This guy is such a sweetie! He ties himself up in knots trying to explain the most abstract concepts of math, and doesn't stop explaining even when the students get it. It's like he's proving things to himself over and over again. But he's a very, very EASY GRADER. Don't even buy the book for the discrete math, just go through his (plentiful) homework and you'll ace the exams and the makeups. Very intellectually stimulating, although his puns are weak --> comparing the K9 graph to a dog ("canine"...get it?!:)) So take a front seat in his class and play a little game with yourself on figuring out what his jokes :) |
81 | 20023 | Very nice teacher. Tends to ramble on a bit, but he know what he's talking about. Had him for Discrete Math one. (Don't bother to buy the book if you have him). Good thing about him is that he gives you a lot of opportunities to pass his class, especially with an A. In my class whe has several retest. Only takes your 3 highest grades and the final. Bad thing about him is taht he spent most of the time trying to convert people in my class to become Math majors. It's your choice if you want to take him or not. |
85 | 20023 | Beyond how he acts, he teaches material. However, usually not what's in the book and he teaches what he tests. You need to pay some attention in class (which can be hard). Exams are tricky as there might be seven questions on an entire exam - meaning if you get half of one wrong, you'll probably get a 'B' instead of an 'A'. Otherwise, there are many worse teachers. |
75 | 20023 | he knows his stuff very well and makes the class easy with his grading policies but his lectures are kinda hard to follow and ineffective a lot of times |
48 | 20012 | Teacher CAN NOT stay on topic. "Is it true..." is what you'll be hearing for ten weeks, and usually it has to do with proms and the way people dress. I had him for Calc IV and he made an extremely easy and simple concept impossible to understand. I had to learn all of the material outside of class. Tests are not graded fairly and he is not approchable. |
75 | 20012 | Nice guy, but I wouldn't take a course with him again... the mumbling and repetitious jokes coupled with his now famous phrase make it VERY hard to pay attention/learn in class. By the end of the quarter I wasn't even bringing my materials to class because I wouldn't get any coherant notes out of it. Sometimes I wonder if he should have been a history teacher rather than a math teacher... |
81 | 20012 | I got an A in this class, because I read the text book. I generally paid attention in class just to hear his jokes and to find out when the next test would be. Otherwise, his lectures were out there and his hand writing is foul.
But the tests are very reasonable... open book, caculator and a notecard. Just read the book and you'll do fine. Elmer actually remembered my name on more than one occasion, which is impressive at RIT... is that true? |
85 | 20012 | Off track and on track at the same time. He gives you several opportunities to make up for a bad test/quiz. Its sometimes difficult to pull information from his teaching style. He is really open and helpful, but during class he flys through the material. |
78 | 20012 | He's a great guy and seems to know his stuff, but he doesn't have the best way of expressing it to the class. He really tends to ramble. the scary part is that through it all I managed to learn something and pass the course. I dont suggest avoiding him as a teacher, just be prepared to sit through the most inane stories...Is That True? well....Its not on my agenda to cover that....Thats a scary thought.... |
99 | 20012 | This guy is great. I had him for Diff EQ I think. Its weird, you really don't think you learn much but when you sit down and do some problems, holey crap, you know the material. He's also a pretty cool guy, I recommend any one with an open mind to take one of his classes. |
71 | 20012 | Really nice guy, mumbles a lot, especially when he digresses, which is far more often than the amount of time spent in focused lecture. His tests cover the material fairly well, just read the book and do the homework and you'll do fine. |
95 | 20012 | Loved the bizarre comments, this was by far the most entertaining math course I've taken. He's a pretty cool guy. I'd often be laughing my ace off in class.
I was not looking forward to prob and stats 1, but he really made the course as painless as possible. Open book calculator cheat sheet tests almost always with a retake avalable in which he takes the better grade. An agreeable amount of homework. |
85 | 20011 | Great guy but not the best teacher. He tends to take off on multiple tangents during the class, which makes it dufficult to understand his lectures. On the plus side he is always available outside of class to help you better understand the material. If you don't mind teaching yourself a little bit and have no problems seeing him for help, you should do fine in his class. I had him for calc 4. |
85 | 20011 | Took discrete math. Didn't learn a thing that applied to anything. My other core courses taught me more about this course than he did. |
78 | 20011 | |
88 | 20011 | Professor Young is a all around good guy. His classes get to be a little side tracked at times, and his jokes a little trite, however he teaches the material well, and is a very fair grader, he will give you every oppurtunity to do very well in his class. |
75 | 20011 | Elmer isn't a bad teacher. Is that true? His class wasn't boring. Is that true? Calculus doesn't suck. Is that true? I resorted to playing with myself in class to keep my mind occupied. Is that true? |
95 | 20011 | This guy is really one of the underappreciated math profs at RIT. Took him for Calc 4, taking him again for Prob and Stats 1. HW isn't too long, tests are fairly quick, he explains all the concepts well enough. He's one of the FEW teachers on campus who can read their students. Is that true? :) |
48 | 20011 | He's a horrible person. Cracks jokes that noone likes, that student boo him for. Can't teach at all. Spends hours talking about "the people in building 10 and building 8", and about "how he isn't allowed to mention because calculus is not a prerequisite for Discrete math." Doesn't curve, the grade is based on tests which are really hard because he can't teach and the textbook's not very good. |
81 | 20011 | Elmer's a good guy- take time to get to know him. Don't plan on learning anything in Calc 4. Quick and easy homework, and quick tests. Always make-ups available for the tests, but plan on them being significantly more difficult. Is that true, if you laugh at Young's jokes you get an A in Calc. 4?? |
95 | 20003 | Great guy but an iffy teacher. He is hard to understand sometimes but if you are willing to read the book you will do fine. |
88 | 20003 | I took him for Differential Equations. What he was saying in the class was not what he wrote on the board. He tends to talk about something irrelevant to the course. I think he is so cool. I laughed sometimes when he talked about other things even things that make no sense. His tests are good. I had no problems passing the course. |
99 | 20003 | Sure, he does go off on tangents quite often, but hey it keeps you entertained. He teaches the material well, assignments cover the material, and quizzez are pretty easy, and he drops 2 oo 3 of 7 or 8 quizzes. Oh, and all homework is bonus. If you want to learn and get a good grade, take Prof Young. |
95 | 20003 | This guy is hilarious if you have the luxury of being able to sit back and laugh at what he's talking about. I feel bad for the guy cuz he tells these jokes and gets no loving from his audience, us :). Engineering Math from him was basically a breeze, i felt the material was pretty easy so he couldn't mess much up. If you concentrate you won't even realize it but he teaches you most everything you need to know. When I got bored I just wrote down his "Is it true.." statements for a chuckle at the end of the quarter. He does take forever to grade tests though. |
95 | 20003 | Eng. Math: Good teacher, the trick is understanding his hw. If you can do that it's an easy A. This guy knows his stuff better than most any teacher I know. He does go of on many random tangents, but if you have a dry sense of humor you will find his jokes amusing. just keep alert. |
65 | 20003 | If you learn well from books, Dr. Young's easy grading will put an A on your report card, but if you rely on lectures look somewhere else. Dr. Young knows his stuff, but he doesn't communicate well at all. He mumbles, he muses, he cracks jokes. He writes facing the board and when he's done it's rarely legible. Ask him to explain it and you'll get an apology instead of an explanation. "Is that true" gets on the nerves, but if that was Dr. Young's only shortcoming he would be a much better teacher. |
95 | 20003 | had him for engineering math. easy. challenge yourself by counting how many times he says "is that true" in a single class period. |
95 | 20002 | Not so bad professor but most of the time, doesn't bother to pay attention to him cuz sometime he can be little confusing. Gave weekly Calculus II quiz instead of the test. (but hard quiz). Managed to get an A from him. Sometime, he can be apologetic toward me when losing my homework, though |
85 | 20002 | |
53 | 20002 | BAD BAD BAD He doesn't explain anything - just scribbles on the board |
68 | 20002 | If you can do the homework well, you can do good on his tests. Be aware of the fact his constantly goes off on tangents. He'll start discussing a topic and 5-10 minutes into it, he'll talk about something completely random. Very dry sense of humor. Easy to fall asleep or lose focus in his classes. |
61 | 20002 | I dont' know more people that have been lost in this man's course than any other teacher here on campus. The only reason these students passed is because of other students in the class. Dont' get me wrong he knows the material inside and out, he just has no clue on how to teach |
95 | 20002 | Is that true? If you know FORTRAN you can skip Calculus? I have no agenda to give negative comments about Professor Young. He is great teacher, smart, funny, and entertaining to listen to. No exams, just weekly quizzes and he drops lowest 2-3 quiz grades - homework can be challenging but the quizzes are easy and on topic. Watch for board mistakes. |
68 | 20002 | |
53 | 20002 | |
75 | 20002 | |
85 | 20002 | Great professor, excellent help in office, great personality. However, his tangents became distracting and confusing. |
71 | 20002 | MY GOODNESS LORD... PLEASE BE PREPARED TO EITHER KNOCK OUT IN CLASS OR TO DRINK TWO LITERS OF COFFEE BEFORE CLASS... HIS JOKES ARE GOOFY AND OUT OF THIS WORLD... HE WILL PUT YOU TO SLEEP FASTER THAN YOU CAN SAY "ZZzzZZz"... HOWEVER, IF YOU DO THE HOMEWORK, YOU WILL DO WELLIN HIS COURSE... |
75 | 20002 | It's evident that Young knows math inside and out, although he does go off on tangents and says "Is that true?" constantly. If you aren't strong in math, I'd recommend someone else. If you pick things up quickly (he writes FAST), you'll probably do just fine. |
53 | 20002 | horrible jokes, really boring. Elmer Fudd-like. Didn't learn anything...TFF |
71 | 20002 | This guy looks like an old Hank Hill, and does indeed talk like Elmer Fudd. His tangents are quite annoying. He doesn't explain things well, and his humor is downright silencing. One time, a classmate raised his hand and told Elmer that he didn't understand anything that he had been explaining and the class cheered and Elmer got mad. Take someone else. |
61 | 20002 | Is that true? Sleep with a tape of that phrase on for ten weeks, with a background accompament of mumbling and you'll get MORE out of the experience than Tech Calc I with Young.
If you're looking for a good reason to leave the institute, take a class with him. |
85 | 20001 | If you are good at math then you can take his courses an ask him for good books on the subject and study from them. He will know a lot of those books. He is excited about math. If you are not so good, you will have a hard time not to be confused although he will always offer you help. Many tiny mistakes on the bord. |
88 | 20001 | He is a professor that knows the material, and has a fair grading system. There are a few things that are a bit blurry, but after time, they are ironed out. A decent professor. |
75 | 20001 | Really bad jokes, can't stay focused on the subject at hand. |
48 | 20001 | NEVER TAKE THIS GUY...HE IS HORRIBLE AND FOCUS FOR THIS LIFE AND TALK ABOUT HISTORY....HE LOVES FAILING PEOPLE TOO. |
85 | 20001 | Goes through the material fairly well, and gives quizes consistant with the course material that has been covered in class. Sometimes he can go off the subject and waffle, and his jokes are terrible, but other than that hes a good prof. |
75 | 19993 | |
95 | 19993 | |
48 | 19993 | Discrete Math:
Is that true? At least I think that is what he was trying to teach. He was a terrible professor and I learned very little. |
