48 | 20023 | Etlinger couldn't teach a normal human how to turn a computer on, let alone JAVA techniques. I had to learn most of CS2 by myself. Advice to prospective students - AVOID AT ALL COSTS. |
48 | 20023 | this guy is the worst.. avoid him at all costs.. otherwise, you'll end up like me, who has to take CS2 again.. he can't teach, uses SAT10 vocab words when explaining SIMPLE things.. tries to sound cool by saying those hard words.. basically, if you don't want to learn ANYTHING and fail, avoid him.. i wouldn't write this comment if he was a good teacher, and gives out horrible tests.. but this guy fails on both aspects.. and he complains during class (instead of complaining, why doesn't he just teach more??) that professor evaluations should be destroyed.. what a worthless teacher.. |

71 | 20023 | Boring. Often gives out wrong examples and would take off on tests if you use them. When he lectures, he makes very simple things seem very confusing. To be honest, I don't think he knows CS very well. |
53 | 20023 | Don't do it, he is really vague and never gets a point across. You won't learn much unless you already know quite a bit about what he's teaching coming in. |
53 | 20023 | I had this Etlinger for CS1. Kind of made me want to kill myself. He can't teach even if he tried. If you want to learn something avoid his class at all costs. Like what he teaches isn't even in sentences it's just words thrown together. It's awful and if you have any common sense you won't take his class. |

78 | 20023 | This was the guy that originally scared me out of CS for 2 years. You know he's a bad advisor when he says "Well then, perhaps you're in the wrong major" before even trying to help you out. Scared to hell when I found out I had him for CS3, but ended up not being bad at all. Boring as hell in lectures, taught myself a lot from the book, but understood his tests. Clear cut and thorough, though rough. |
99 | 20012 | I had him for Prof Comm, and I do have to say that overall I had a really great experience. His teaching style was nice and he always had good examples of what not to do in order to increase our communication skills. |
81 | 20012 | He can be wordy at times, but he's not a bad teacher. His grading system is clearly outlined, and he is well organized. |
78 | 20012 | Itook his professional communications class. I hate that class all the time and don't feel to go there. |
68 | 20012 | I had no problem with CS1 or CS2, but that's probably because I didn't have Etlinger as a professor for those two. Needless to say I didn't last long at all in CS3. His lectures consisted of me dozing off every now and then only to wake up and find out he still wasn't saying anything relevant. As far as tests go, studying is just a waste of time and chances are you're gonna bomb it anyways. I'll give him this much: he does know his stuff, he just can't convey it to the rest of the class. Be prepared to learn a lot of the material on your own with this guy. |
75 | 20012 | difficult for lecture but good for labs, just watch any style rules. Outside of class if he has time is willing to help, and will show point out mistakes, and help. |
53 | 20012 | Anyone? Anyone? |
58 | 20011 | His lectures are random thoughts that he tries to associate with object-oriented-programming. His makes very little sense, and DOES NOT prepare you for any of his tests or the labs. |
65 | 20011 | He can be very arguementitive at times, and comes off as an extremely ornery human being. He definitely knows the material, but is much more apt to talk AT a group of people rather than try to work WITH them. |
53 | 20011 | I had him for Prof Comm, and he just would NOT stop rambling on and on about anything and everything. I didn't learn a thing in that class. |
75 | 20011 | he is ok...very strict. needs to be more nice with grading and be a bit more helpful
|
68 | 20011 | Stick to your administrative duties. |
68 | 20011 | I had Hank's class for Freshman Seminar way back when and thought he was a great guy. Funny in class discussions and pretty down to earth. I'm not so sure anymore.
It's been a while since I had him for CS3 but the thing I remember was his unwillingness to compromise. Though I've not had his class in 3 years, I've heard nothing but complaints from other students. In my dealings with him on advising issues, he seems to take great joy in making students squirm and jump through hoops to satisfy his requirements. More of that unwillingness to compromise and work with students that I noticed before. |
81 | 20003 | The only problem I have with him is that he talks to the wall while teaching the class. He does not included the students and encouraged participations. You just have to work extra harder if you are taking him. |
48 | 20003 | Very dry prof. Sucks life out of material, does not thoroughly go through topics. On his best day he is mediocre. |
65 | 20003 | He leans on the wall to teach his lecture. What a terrible teacher! Only reason I am giving him a D is because he kinda knows what he's talking about. |
48 | 20003 | This guy is the worst teacher of any subject ever. He may know the material himself, but does not prepare the students for tests, labs, or projects. He never used the overhead or blackboard. His tests also do not adhere to the departmental course layout. He will present material that has not been done in lab yet. Trust me you wont learn it in class, lab is your only refuge. DO NOT TAKE |
61 | 20003 | seems to know the material well, now he needs to learn how to teach it. Very dry, very dull, bring a blanket and a pillow, chances are you will be sleeping in this class. |
65 | 20003 | A very pompous individual that comes across as if he has more important things to do than prepare a meaningful lecture. If undergraduate advising is too much of a distraction, then he should give up teaching, because he certainly does not have his heart into it. On the other hand, from my experience with him during his limited office hours, his advising skills are seriously lacking as well. He thinks he is the Almighty reincarnate and sure acts like it.
Avoid if possible. |
71 | 20003 | Etlinger is by far the worst male professor in the department. |
71 | 20002 | Boring as sh!t |

75 | 20002 | I had Hank for CS2 and Professional Communicaitons. Overall he was pretty drab, and tended to wander a lot. Other than that, he's not a bad teacher. As far as I recall he was fairly lenient about grading, and I don't know about help because I never really asked questions. I have, however, had many questions outside of class about scheduling, degree requirements, etc. and he was always pretty helpful about that stuff. |
78 | 20002 | can be real boring, tough grader, but he puts a lot of effort into teaching and planning his lessons |
75 | 20002 | The guy scratches himself. I feel sorry for all of you CS Undergraduates that have to go through him to get your diploma. He's an easy teacher for Professional Communications, you learn absoultely nothing in the class, but he's boring. |
78 | 20002 | I'm not too fond of him. He was my advisor last year and I came to him for help because I was struggling with CS 1. He told me to switch majors or switch schools! |
75 | 20002 | You won't learn much in his class and he is boring. |
75 | 20002 | Thinks he is cool stuff. The guy still doesn't have a webpage which is something you would expect a CS professor to have. |
85 | 20002 | He's a good teacher. He likes to have things EXACTLY his way and if you learn that you will do well in his class. DO NOT take him for lab though... that's not too much fun! |
85 | 20002 | I took him for CS1, CS2, CS3 and a lab. He was alright... nothign too great. You had a do a lot of outside work to keep up. |
95 | 20001 | He knew his topics, and was very willing to help the students. The only complaint I had with him was his limited office hours. |
53 | 20001 | He's a turd. Maybe he's changed since I had him, but he completely discouraged student questions in my class. He constantly belittled any questions that were asked and often made fun of the people who asked them. |
85 | 19993 | Scary! |
71 | 19993 | Evil, sadistic, but mostly knows what he s talking about |
75 | 19993 | Makes you go to sleep.
Boring. However , he s willing to help you out |
48 | 19993 | Hate dislike of Hank is difficult to put into words. His grading is purely arbitrary. His lectures are his meandering thoughts for the day instead of anything to do with the course. He scratches himself. He is hyprocritcal in professional conduct. He takes months to grade simple assignments. He can t be troubled to extend any degree of effort past some preset minimum. He is a waste of time. |
65 | 19993 | I only took one class with him, but it was probably the worst experience of my life. A professor that boring should never be teaching professional communications. He takes way too long to grade anything as well. Over a month to grade a one page paper. |
