6820023I have to give her some credit for trying. But most of the time she has no idea what she is talking about at all. You can't ask her anything and she definitely has an attitude problem.

9920023The fact that I managed to get an A in her class says something. I was a first time CS student with no prior programming experience. I breezed through her classes with very little outside studying. If people aren't doing well, it's probably because they aren't trying, aren't showing up, or aren't caring...
5320012i don't have much to write.. they explained everything.

4820012Yup
9920012I have to give Nan props. I thought she was a fairly good teacher and most of the people voting here seem bitter because they didn't try enough. CS requires work outside of class folks.
5320012i was continually dissapointed by this class. this being my first time progrqamming i was always confused. all i learned was that if you have a question dont ask Nan. my labbie ended up teaching me everything that i was SUPPOSED to be learning in lecture. it is only thanks to my friends and my labbie that i managed to pass this class. if this is your first time taking CS1 i advise against Nan. !NAN
7520012Kind of disorganized methinks.

4820011Very hard to learn off of, and she gives attitude when she has to help. Very boring as well.
5320011Shes bad for a couple of reasons. She doesnt know alot of code, always says she has to look it up. She makes alot of mistakes. She makes powerpoint presentations and then hands them out... Its hard to keep awake in a class this boring.

5820011While Nan knows something about the material, she is so scatter-brained that she cannot effectively convey the lesson. When teaching several related algorithms, Nan will randomly skip between them. Prepare for a note-taking nightmare.
5820011She can't teach well, doesn't know what she's teaching, and she's never prepared.
8120011Lectures were a bit boring, but not too bad overall.
8520011Prof. Schaller does not fall into the category of "awesome teacher" (very few professors do), but she is a good teacher overall. Her lectures are solid--they have good content and they prepare you completely for the quizzes. Also, she's also friendly and is easily accessable outside of class. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her classes.
6520011Does not know Java programming and makes consistent errors. Material is ill prepared and class is too early in the morning for her.
6820011Looking throught the eyes of an experienced programmer (having begun programming in 6th grade) Schaller's CS1 class is summed in three words: pitiful, boring, and easy. Her class is pitiful because her foreknowledge of computer programming itself is two-decades outdated at best. Not only is she unfamiliar with Java and completely ignorant of UNIX, but also lacking work experience with the essence of OOP (Object-Oriented Programming) itself. Though she may present the material like any other professor, her self-made examples are more poorly constructed than those of some of her students. For the OOP experienced student, this class is a very easy A--a nice lecture to do Physics and Math homework in; but I would recommend that a new programmer avoid the class with all cost. All the Java I have learned this quarter has been exclusively in Lab or on my own. The class was only worth the easy grade.
5320011Schaller does not know what is going on at any time and can't answer students questions. In lab she is twice as bad, she believes yelling at struggling students is teaching and does it frequently. Eventhough I received a B from here in CS1 I would NEVER be caught dead in her class again.
7820011I had her for Computer Graphics 1. Her lectures were boring but very few lectures are fun to begin with. It appears she tries to teach but doesn't do that great of a job. Be prepare to do some outside class work. Her test were fair. The projects for the class seem to be lacking in substance. I wish we had done just a bit more in 3D.
6520011Worst Teacher I ever had. I had her for CS 1 and she told me to consider a diffrent major. I got a B in the course, and an A in CS 2 and CS 3. Good thing I didn't consider a new major. She was not a very good teacher at all and i had to learn everything myself. Many other CS teachers are good, but avoid Schaller at all cost.
4820004I took Nan for Graphics1. I want my money back. It was the singular worst experience I have endured as a CS major. I'm sure she's quite smart, but she could not teach her way out of a wet paper bag with scissors in her hands. Even if she does understand the material, showing us Pixar shorts and having us code 2D programs in SRGP taught me nothing. The last assignment was the only on ewhich dealt with 3D, and it was overly simple. What a dissapointment. If you cant' fire her, just make sure someone else teaches this course.
5820002not prepared for class often, and incompitent

5820002Professor seemed to have a lack of programming skill and general air of incompetence around her. In addition, she continually got in verbal arguments with students, namely this one kid we affectionately called "Milton".
7820002As far as teaching, she's pretty average... not the worst, but certainly not one of the best. I had her for graphics; I don't recall the tests being too tough, and the projects seemed reasonable for a high-level course.
9920002She's the greatest!!!:)
7520001I had the class at 8am, so that may be part of why I had trouble. It just seemed like a lot of small but important things weren't mentioned that would have been very helpful for the labs. My lab instructor and lab grader assumed that she told us all these things that were never mentioned. The coding standard was so complex for a programming beginner such as myself that I didn't figure it out until the last 2 weeks of th quarter. If someone had sat down and explained it better (I read it dozens of times and still forgot things), then my lab grades would have been much higher, since the coding standard is where I lost most of my points. Nan is seems to be a friendly person, but was out the first and last week of class for surgery and business trips. I read every page of the text assigned and generally knew what I was doing - or so I thought until I took the tests. A database of practice test questions would be very helpful. My advice is to not take CS at 8am, cus you just won't go to class very often, to read the book, find someone smart to help with labs, and to find some old tests to figure out what you forget and fix it BEFORE the tests.
8820001She can tell you what you need to know in the business world because she has been there before.
4820001Doesn't know what she is talking about most of the time. Mean to students. Horrible teacher!
