95 | 20023 | Orr explains the material pretty well, and is generally fair on the grading. He is a cut up too. |
48 | 20023 | DISGRACE TO RIT . |

65 | 20023 | I had Orr for Discrete II and found him to be a poor prof. He was habitually late, didn't know the test schedule, used poor copiers so notes were unable to read, tests were insanely hard (who cares about definitions anyways?), and didn't return homework assignments before tests. He single-handedly ruined my entire spring quarter. |
95 | 20023 | I had him for discrete math 1, so not a difficult class but i still found him to be a good professor. He's good at conveying information and his tests are fair. He does genuinly want students to learn. He's willing to qive quizzes for extra points if a class did poorly on a test. He also tends to curve at the end of the class, especialy homework. Unfortunatly he's got a monitone and can be rather booring. If you start out paying attention you'll keep paying attention and learn alot but if your mind starts to wander than it's difficult to get back into the flow of the lecture. Overall very nice, very willing to help, very fair. I'd gladly take him again |
65 | 20023 | Homework is graded with an iron fist - Tests questions are asked so poor, you don't know what he wants you to write. He doesn't teach very well - tends to mumble and turn his back to you when speaking at a low volume. Worst professor I've had since I've been at RIT. |
75 | 20012 | While being knowledgable in the subject materaial at hand, I found that he sometimes does not go into the basics of the problem, such as how it came to that point. I do find him fair grader, whoever, don't use his E-mail, he rarely checks it, along with his office hours. Overall, I think I could have done better with a different teacher, but he did a okay job. |
71 | 20012 | This guy is so old, I thought he was going to keel over in class. He mumbles and rambles on to himself. He is not at all interesting, but although he does try to make some puns. I fell asleep almost every class, but u have to do the homework, so I retaught myself from the book. Not too bad. Try taking someone who might keep your interest. |
99 | 20012 | Prof Orr is an amazing teacher. I had him for Discrete I and II. Lectures can be boring but he presents the material well, tests and quizes are all straight forward and graded fairly. Very approachable and easy to find for help!! |
99 | 20012 | At first I thought oh wow, this guy is old and this class is going to suck, but by the 3rd day in his class, I realized this man knows how to present the information so you learn it, his tests are straight forward, he is a very fast grader, and gives examples so you can learn the material |
81 | 20012 | Very nice, concerned about students however he does not know how to convey information to students. |
78 | 20012 | nice enough guy, mumbles a lot. easy to "trick" into doing the hw for you. stay awake and you'll be ok |
95 | 20012 | Richard Orr is a really cool guy. You won't think so at first, infact you'll probably think he isn't that smart and you'll consider dropping his class. This man lives for math, just take a look in his office which is filled to capacity with math books that he has read. He is extremely smart and is always available before tests to help you prepare. His lectures are hard to follow because he discusses in depth the subject and uses advanced theorems and proofs. His tests don't use the advanced lecture material/theorems however and is basically a reflection on how well you know the homework. Tests are good if you do your homework, and review the study guide prior to the test. The first few weeks I thought he was dull and not that knowledgable but after having him for discrete I & II I have a huge appreciation for him. Sometimes he can be quite a funny guy as well. |
95 | 20012 | He is nice. He knows his stuff well. you wont like him in the begining but later on you will understand what he is talkin about. He is very good on grading exams. exams are piece of cake. |
95 | 20012 | Great experience with professor. Lectures were hard to follow. Walk out of class shaky with material. Homework reenforces material well. Fair grader. Fair tests. A professor that knows all students last names! AMAZING! Great experience with him. Highly recommended. (Discrete math 1 and 2) |
71 | 20012 | A very boring teacher who is difficult to understand. His lack of personality makes it hard to sit through class. He knows what he's talking about but seems to have trouble conveying it to the class. The students were often correcting him. He is only helpful if you visit him during office hours. |
91 | 20011 | He really knows his stuff. It is a boring class but that is not his fault it is the dry material. The tests and quizzes are fairly graded. |
91 | 20004 | Collects homework every class and is a very fair grader. Had him for Discrete II and he has been one of the best math teachers I have had at RIT. Kind of on the boring side, but is very good at teaching the material. Tests are comparable to the work done in class and the homework and review session prepares you very well. |
88 | 20004 | He gave alot of homework, which would have been easier if I had used both study guide and solutions manual. He doesn't correct homework, just grades it, so if you want to know what was wrong, ask in class or see him after class. He was very funny and loved engaging in joking with the students in class near the end of term, but was nervous acting at first. I wish he would have told some girls in the class to stop being annoying to all the other students by talking amongst themselves about their innane lives through the ENTIRE class. (You know who you are and I hope you sit in gum- some people actually pay for their classes you little spoiled brats , so be quiet and let the teacher be heard.) |
91 | 20004 | Very good at explaining complex ideas. The homework given gets a bit tedious though. |
65 | 20003 | Not a mean guy, but he's a pretty bad teacher who mumbles like a stroke victim. Get ready to learn from the textbook. |
71 | 20003 | Orr is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. You can barely understand what he's saying and he's boring. Be prepared to learn form the textbook if you take his class. |
88 | 20003 | |
95 | 20003 | Orr is a good teacher and a great guy. i had him for calc 1 a while ago. know your definitions and homework. also, make an effort to talk to him outside of class. talk to him once and you'll be one of his favorite students. also pay attention to this guy's idiosynchracies. he's a psychology experiment waiting to happen. |
75 | 20003 | bad teacher dont get him |
91 | 20003 | I had Mr. Orr for three classes and overall he is one of the best i have ever had. First of all, those complaints about mumbling are crazy. if you have ever had an asia teacher here at rit then you would appreciate the fluent english mr orr speaks. you can also ask him to speak up, i have seen it done many time and he is nice about it. There is graded homework sevral times a week, but it is never graded hard so if you don't have a clue what you are doing you will still get about 50% just for trying. Tests aren't bad if you check the website for old exams and he usually goes over most of what will be on quizes the day before. Mr Orr is very helpful outside of class. I think he really enjoys his job of teaching and he shows it. I would recomment going to him for help with work from ANY math class. He knows his stuff and explains it very well for people that don't understand. |
95 | 20002 | He keeps to a tight schedule, which is really needed in a math class. If you keep up you will learn everything. He also goes out of his way to answer students questions. A really great guy, highly recommended. |
99 | 20002 | knows what he is talking about...but students must ask questions! |
88 | 20002 | |
99 | 20002 | The best professor in RIT. That says it all. Have done all my calc courses with him |
71 | 20002 | OMG... AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!!!... THIS GUY HAS THE FORREST GUMP DISEASE... |
99 | 20002 | I don't understand why some people are trashing this guy. He is a totally cool and understandable professor. Sure he mumbles a bit. But after the first couple of classes, you'll get used to it. collects hw everyday so buy a solutions manual. gives reasonable quizzes and easy tests. infact, he even has old tests and quizzes on his website for you to look at. Class gets boring with this guy if students don't interact with him. So my advice, ask lots of questions and you'll do fine. |
91 | 20002 | He's a cool guy. If you read the text a day before you will understand exactly what he says. Tests are quite hard, but not impossible. He's also available around 4-6pm in learning dev center first floor science building |
85 | 20001 | He is a very nice, fair teacher, but there are a few things that are not explained as clearly as I would like. You will need to be able to understand the textbook somewhat to succeed. |
81 | 20001 | Nice guy, but he's a tad on the boring side, and has a habit of mumbling when he starts thinking about something other than the topic at hand. He gives a nice mix of easy & challenging problems. It's difficult to fail the class if you pay attention, but at the same time, an A requires a bit of work. |
75 | 20001 | Boring! It's like staring at a brick wall and there is plenty of that here @ RIT. |
85 | 20001 | |
75 | 20001 | He tends to mumble way too much, so sit in the front of the room. The trick is to know when to tune out - when he is mumbling or does one of those math problems that takes 15 minutes, just don't pay attention, or he'll get you more confused than you were before he started. All homework is graded, so get a student solutions manual and a few friends to help you. Every once in a while he assigns some weird theoretical problem from the book (I had him for calc 3) that is near impossible to figure out unless you spend hours on it. My advice is to write something down, even a formula you might use, and just hand that in. You can usually get a point or two out of five. He never tests these types of problems. Test or quiz every once a week, so keep up with your homework. Sit in the front, do your HW every night, get a solutions manual and study guide, and go to the math help sessions for homework help if you need it. Maybe another teacher can explain things better. Oh yeah, his website has all the previous year's tests and quizzes, so take them for practice - the third test he gave us was identical to the one from the year before! Overall, I think he knows what he is doing, but he tends to be absent minded and too theoretical for most students. If you are strong in math, you'll probably do ok with enough work and a few weeks to get used to him, but if math is hard for you, I'd suggest finding a different professor. |
58 | 20001 | MUMBLES cant understand a thing he sayz sit in the front of the class does long theoretical problems on the board that have absolutely nothing to do with the class. |
48 | 20001 | I had him for calc II and he was absolutely terrible. He needs to retire now. He has the worst handwriting, mumbles really fast, and doesn't answere queations very well.
|
48 | 20001 | ALL HE KNOWS IS HOW TO MUMBLE...I THINK HE NEEDS TO LEARN ENGLISH....MAY BE RIT WILL GIVE HIM FREE LESSON...REALLY UNFAIR GUY. DONT TAKE HIM |
78 | 20001 | Does tend to mumble, sit in front of class. Often what he mumbles isn't important anyway, it's some tangent he is thinking about. He asks the class if they have any questions about the homework every class, which is good. Sometimes the homework hasn't been covered in class yet. Homework is graded. |
