75 | 20023 | Knows his stuff (360) but often spends too much on the underlying theme. Uses powerpoint slides to death. Terrible at grading (refuses to give A's or B's). Rather strange during lecture. Great person, terrible teacher. |

53 | 20012 | Bill Stratton is a sorta nice guy. He tries (but like most professors fails) in making class interesting by relating to the students and injecting humor. I admire his attempts, though. As a teacher, however, he's an absolute abhorrance. Powerpoint use is absurd, half the time making the topic more confusing than it already is. Also has a problem writing tests and quizzes at a reasonable level for the student just starting out in DB. The only people I know of that got A's or B's had lots of prior experience with DB systems and design, and he seems to have a sense of pride when saying "I wreck 4.0 (GPA's)". Needs to communicate better with the class, and realize that saying a good test result has been obtained when 78% of the class has a C or lower is absurd, and will get the class really mad at you. |
75 | 20012 | Stratton knows his database 360, but doesn't know how to teach it to people that don't know about DB. In the beginning of the quarter he was very good at explaining concepts and took his time to. I just got lost in themiddle of the quarter. Maybe it was me. Torwards the end he should have explained more concepts than in depth about things we don't need to know. Tests were too hard! Groups needed to be more supervised as well. Quirky guy tho. |
95 | 20012 | An excellent teacher, very down to earth and frank with people. Will admit when he makes a mistake and will sit there and look up an answer for you if he doesn't know it. Just make sure you don't play Pinball and Minesweeper TOO much in class, or else it'll catch up with you. |

95 | 20012 | This guy really loves programming and knows his stuff. Lecture is boring but he is good at explaining stuff if you show some interest in learning it. Ask lots of questions, he's very helpful. |
48 | 20012 | Class was not difficult but was not managed well. Most students got lower than normal grades that dropped their GPA. He was frequently disorganized and did not cover all the material. |
78 | 20012 | Stratton is a person who knows and understands his stuff. I had him for Database and he definitely knew all there was to know about databases. Unfortunately, he expects you to know everything too. He grades very hard on his tests and a C is considered a very good average for the class. If you really want to learn about databases, take Stratton, but don't get your hopes up on getting an easy A, or even an easy B. |
75 | 20012 | I am not sure if its him or the 2 and a half hour lecture, but I know I can speak for many people when I say that I am completely clueless about JAVA 218. I would recommend a different professor for 218. |
78 | 20012 | Bill is a great guy. don't get me wrong, i wish i could grasp the whole concept of JAVA, but not only do we have homework assignments (JAVA programming), we also have lecture preps (more written homework), and we have inclass-exercises that we never do in class (more programming homework). if JAVA 218 wasn't so rushed and they didnt try to feed you 4 or 5 different concepts at once, Bill would teach it well. my problem is less with Bill and more with the IT department for pushing so much information into this course. |
95 | 20012 | I like Bill very much, he is a very personable guy. I believe he is an effective teacher. Unfortunatly I can't say the same for 218. I don't blame any of the Profs they are trying to cover the material as best they can. If anyone from the IT dept reads this and can do anything about it please water down 218. Make it a slightly slower moving class. Make HWs, Lecture preps, and in class Exs worth my time. Making practicals worth 50% of our grade is just plain evil. |
95 | 20011 | Nice Guy, he made the class interesting. |
99 | 20011 | Prof. Stratton was a great professor for Database. He could always tell when he was boring us or we weren't getting the material. His tests were always fair, and he does everything he can to make sure you get a decent grade. |
95 | 20011 | Bill really knows his stuff and his 360 class is great. He is always there to answer questions and makes class a lot of fun!
Just had him for 485. Knows his database theory down pat. Oracle/SQL knowledge could use some work. Otherwise a great class and a funny guy :) |
95 | 20011 | Injects the humor, knows his stuff, grades fairly. If you don't like powerpoints, you may want to steer clear (I don't mind them, and he does post them, eventually!), but Prof. Stratton is definately one to take for 360 (database). |
99 | 20011 | Good guy |
95 | 20004 | Nice guy, interested in student's learning the material. Data comm was boring as anything, but that's not his fault. |
95 | 20003 | Bill is very knowledgable, and while he could stand to get away from the powerpoint presentations he normally does a good job of getting everybody in the class to understand the concepts. He has a great sense of humor, and is always available to students whenever they need help or have a question. |
95 | 20003 | Great guy. You will definitly learn a lot, and he is very accomidating when it comes to projects. Not a stickler on the rules, he just wants to make sure you can do what needs to be done, learn the material. |
95 | 20003 | You can say a lot for a professor, when most of the students call him by his nickname "Bill"... Excellent professor, and he is more interested in you learning, than in you being forced to follow rules... |
75 | 20002 | SAY NO TO POWERPOINT STRATTON!!!!!!!. Maybe its the topics being covered or the dimmed lights, but if he would have just sticked to the whiteboard teaching he would have been much more effective. |
99 | 20002 | |
99 | 20002 | Very very good professor. He is extremely knowledgable and will help you any way he can. He seems to really enjoy teaching and this shows in his lectures and with the effort he puts in. He also adds a little humor to the course, which can be dry but is better than none. So if you have the chance to take a class with him, do yourself a favor and take it. |
95 | 20002 | Bill is a good guy. Very amusing. Also lenient when teaching a class for the first time. He is fair and is a good teacher. |
95 | 20002 | Very cool teachers. Will help with ANY problem that you might have. |
95 | 20002 | He's all-around a good guy. Makes classes interesting, and makes the 8 am seem not so bad. A little hard, but very fair and helpful. |
99 | 20001 | I like him. He's a wonderful person and really knows how to treat students. I wish him luck. |

88 | 19993 | good humored - knowledgable in a lot of things. One of the best around. He should have won the Eisenhart Teaching Award, not Yacci. |
